2020 Color of the Year

Well.... here we are....almost a whole week into 2020.
How’s it going for you so far?
Anyone else totally lose track of time between Christmas and January? It’s like... the Twilight Zone from Christmas Eve to January 2 and then regular life resumes.
So, in case you’re still wondering what day...month... or year it is...
 It’s Monday.
January 6th.
 2020.

When I started this blog in 2013 (In a galaxy far far away...) I always shared the Pantone Color of the Year each January. So, I am keeping with tradition and spilling the details on what colors and trends we should expect for 2020.
We have had some fun colors in the last 7 years (2014 radiant orchid was probably my fave) and I love to see how these color picks influence the beauty world (and fashion and home decor).

If you don’t know what Pantone is, let me give you the short version:
“Pantone is a standardized color matching system, utilizing the Pantone numbering system for identifying colors. ... Originally designed for the graphics industry, the pantone solids palette is now used by a wide range of industries, and is the most commonly used palette.” (Colorguides.net)

So basically, The Pantone Color Institute numbers every (yes, every) color and makes them easier to identify, standardize, and color match on a larger scale.

So, how the heck does that relate to makeup and home decor you ask?
Well..
The Pantone Color Institute takes great time and consideration in choosing a color that forecasts the trends for the coming year.
They consider current culture, art, lifestyle trends, fashion, politics, world events and more into their color choices. The color of the year should be one that can be correlated to the NOW but also to the TOMORROW. The color choice has to be relatable and trendy for the upcoming year (or else, who would pay attention to it?)
That seems like a very hard job if you ask me. I could never pick just one color.
But, Pantone has it down to a science and I love seeing their color choices for each year and watching them influence fashion, interior design, and of course... makeup.

So, without further ado... the 2020 Pantone Color of the Year is...
Alright... I must admit. I was underwhelmed when I saw that this was their pick for the color of 2020. HOW does blue reflect such a milestone year? A new decade?
Last year’s color was called “Living Coral” and it was just stunning.
I mean look at that bright coral!! I loved it. I definitely saw an increase of brightly colored coral influenced makeup this past year (especially in lipsticks and eyeshadow palettes).
So, how is Classic Blue suppose to forecast and translate into 2020?
This is Pantone’s description of this color,

“A timeless and enduring blue hue, PANTONE 19-4052 Classic Blue is elegant in its simplicity. Suggestive of the sky at dusk, the reassuring qualities of the thought-provoking PANTONE 19-4052 Classic Blue highlight our desire for a dependable and stable foundation on which to build as we cross the threshold into a new era.”

So... timeless, reassuring, dependable... boring? Okay, just kidding about that last one...I see what they are getting at. We are at the dawn of a new decade and with that brings all sorts of new influences, technologies, problems and solutions. I think I can appreciate the calm of the classic blue a little more when I found out the first time they chose a blue hue, it was for the year 2000! Oh you know... just the turn of the century...nothing important (sarcasm alert!).
The color of the year is released every December. So, when it was released in December 1999 it was fresh on scene of Y2K and all the craziness that was bubbling around the new century. Remember when they said all the computers wouldn’t know how to change from 1999 to 2000 and they would all crash and we would be in the dark ages?
HILARIOUS now... but at the time it was actually a fear.
Classic Blue for 2020? I get it now and I have to say... it’s actually a lovely color to incorporate in your home, clothing, accessories, and yes... MAKEUP!
What is more calming than blue? What is more classic? What is more appropriate than a hue that represents dusk before the dawn of a new decade? Nothing.
Pantone also released this graphic photo as a visual representation of the dynamics of Classic Blue.
I love this photo WAY more than the plain Classic Blue image because it gives you so much more to work with. Look at all those different blue tones! Gorgeous!
So, boring as it may seem at first glance, it really is an easy and fun color to incorporate into your home, fashion, and beauty choices this year.

Let me give you a true blue roundup for ways to add this color of the year into your 2020.

First stop... home decor!
As I said before, blue is such a calming color. No wonder spas use it to keep a relaxed atmosphere.
I love that this shade works both as a statement color and also a classic neutral. It doesn’t SCREAM bold, but it still gets it’s subtle and beautiful point across.
Adding a new blue throw pillow or accent rug can change the look of a whole room without being hard to pull off.
All of these blue finds are from Target! That lamp and arm chair need to be in my living room ASAP!

Blue makeup has been having a moment this past year and I am glad to see it slide right on into 2020. Such a fun way to add a little pop to the eyes without being too over the top. That deep metallic navy by Sleek would make such a beautiful and non traditional smoky eye!
If you want ALL the blues...Colourpop has every blue shade you could ever want in the Blue Moon eye palette (and it’s under $12). If shimmer is more your style, try the Stila Shimmer and Glow liquid eye shadow in the shade Vibrant Sapphire. As it says, it’s shimmer and not glitter. Just a subtle metallic sheen that will make you shine like a blue diamond (*cough cough* Heart of the Ocean... really showing my age here). I love these liquid shadows and they are perfect for applying all over the lid with your finger and letting it be a smudgy shimmery true blue beautiful eye look.

Blue eyeliner is definitely not new on the makeup scene this year. It has been around for years and it has been a personal favorite of mine to use when I want to switch things up from boring black. A deep navy liner is still classic, but also a little more fun when you’re tired of keeping it to a black or brown. The Smashbox Always Sharp Kohl Liner is my #1 when I want to use a blue toned eyeliner and the Colourpop BFF Navy liquid liner is a close second. If you’re looking for more of a blue color punch, try the Wet N Wild Megaliner in Voltage Blue. It’s definitely bold, electric, and super fun.
Blue eyeliner is an easy way to incorporate the color of the year into your makeup routine without jumping fully into the deep blue (makeup) sea.

Let’s move on to some fun blue fashion finds!

A super easy way to be on trend but not totally blue from head to toe (anyone else keep thinking of that song “I’m Blue Da Ba Dee Da Ba Die” or is that just me?)...is by incorporating blue toned jewelry and accessories into your look. I received that gorgeous blue hair clip for Christmas and it is just the perfect hair accessory to bring in the blue trend. Blue velvet scrunchies (yes... I said velvet AND scrunchies in the same sentence) are also a hot hair item this year.
I love these blue statement jewelry pieces for adding a touch of blue to any outfit. Those earrings and feather blue necklace NEED TO BE MINE ASAP! These gorgeous blue jewelry items are steals on Amazon right now (and come in multiple colors other than blue).

Alright, these might not be blue suede shoes, but they’re just as gorgeous.
Take a (literal) step outside the ankle boot norm and grab those navy blue booties. So classic but also something different with that deep blue hue. (They’re also super comfy and you can rock them well into spring).
If you’re looking for a way to incorporate the classic blue into your work wardrobe, those low heel blue pumps are the PERFECT way to add in the color of the year. Not to mention... they’re adorable and also functional.
If comfort is more your style, the Adidas Cloudfoam running shoe in Glow Blue is the way to go. Comfy, but still on trend and super stylish.

This isn’t technically the “classic blue” tone but a Chambray shirt is 100% classic and should be a closet staple for everyone. It works as a neutral and can be worn with ANY color out there. Literally any color. Even the classic blue can still pop against this neutral denim shade. It can be dressed up or down and is an easy way to add a little blue to your closet.

Will you be adding this Classic Blue into your home, makeup, or wardrobe this year?
So many choices and ways to gently (or boldly) add this shade into your world.
Now that I’ve mentioned this, you will notice blue items popping up everywhere and you will already be ahead of the trends.

Happy 2020 everyone!
Wishing you a year as timeless, reassuring and calming as Classic Blue.

And for your blue listening pleasure....
